Our fox was reading a particularly tense confession scene — you know the kind, where he finally admits everything — when she noticed the most romantic line in the chapter was wrapped in little asterisks. Stars around *I have always loved you.* Very literal. Not at all what the author intended.

Turns out our books had been whispering their emphasis instead of actually showing it. Bold wasn't bold. Italics weren't italic. Just a bunch of lonely asterisk characters cluttering up your most dramatic moments like uninvited footnotes.

We've had a stern word with the code. It has apologized.
