FOCUS FOUR HAZARD REFERENCE

The Focus Four — Falls, Struck-By, Caught-In/Between, and Electrocution — account for over 60 percent of construction deaths and are the most heavily tested topics.

Falls: OSHA 1926.502 requires fall protection at 6 feet. Systems: guardrail, safety net, personal fall arrest. Covers leading edges, residential construction, and controlled access zones.

Struck-By: vehicles, flying objects, falling objects, swinging equipment. Requirements: hard hats, spotters, exclusion zones, high-visibility vests near equipment.

Caught-In/Between: unguarded machinery, excavation cave-ins, equipment rollovers. Requirements: machine guarding, trenching and shoring, lockout/tagout.

Electrocution: overhead lines, power tools, extension cords. OSHA requires 10-foot minimum clearance from lines up to 50kV. GFCI required on all construction site receptacles.
