Description
BARBER PREP: PASS YOUR STATE BOARD WRITTEN EXAM FIRST TRY
The barber state board written exam covers sanitation and infection control, hair cutting theory, scalp and skin science, chemical services, and state law. The national first-attempt pass rate is approximately 65 percent. Candidates who fail most often struggle with infection control procedures, the chemistry behind chemical services, and state law requirements.
FADE GUIDE
The fade is the most requested service in any barbershop and a skill tested on state board exams. This guide covers all 8 variations with guard numbers and technique detail.
Low fade: starts at the temples. Mid fade: begins at the middle of the sides, most versatile. High fade: starts close to the top, dramatic contrast. Skin fade: taken to bare skin. Drop fade: follows the curve of the head behind the ear. Burst fade: semicircle around the ear. Taper fade: gradual blend without full skin exposure. Temple fade: targets the temple area only.
For each fade: starting point, blending direction, guard numbers and transition zones, best hair textures, common mistakes, and what state boards specifically test.
STATE HOURS TRACKER
California and Texas require 1,500 hours. Florida requires 1,200. New York requires only 500. Select your state to see the exact requirement and track hours logged, remaining, and estimated completion date.
SANITATION CHECKLIST
Infection control and sanitation make up 30 percent of the state board written exam. Pre-service: wash hands 20 seconds minimum, disinfect implements in EPA-registered solution with 10-minute contact time. Post-service: discard single-use items, disinfect metal implements, disinfect station and chair. Straight razor: single-use disposable blade required per client in most states. Clipper blades: spray disinfect between every client.
