Baile Beo

par David McGinn

v1.4.0 53 Mo Universel 4+

Description

Irish place names were anglicised over centuries. 'Mainistir Eimhín' became 'Monasterevin'. Tír an Iúir became 'Terenure'. Cionn tSáile became 'Kinsale'. Thousands of names stripped of meaning, replaced with English inventions that carry nothing. We never restored them.

Baile Beo does.

Across Ireland, towns, villages, and landscapes have long had a local identity. These names described the land itself — its geography, history, ecology, mythology, characters, and memories. Through colonisation and anglicisation, mirroring the decline of the Irish language itself, these logainmneacha (place names) were largely pushed aside and forgotten by most people who pass through them every day.

The Irish language is experiencing a remarkable revival. With it comes a growing movement of people reclaiming the names that were taken — learning what they mean, where they come from, and what they say about the land beneath them.

Baile Beo is built for that.

WHY BAILE BEO?

Irish place names are more than arbitrary labels — they are records of how people understood their locality and the land. Mainistir Eimhín means 'Saint Evin's Monastery'. Cnoc na Cásca means 'the hill of Easter'. Leaca na Nóiníní means 'the hillside abounding in daisies'. Every name carries a world.

Whether you're fluent in Irish or a foghlaimeoir, Baile Beo puts the real names of Ireland back in your hands.

Every town has a story.

Nouveautés (v1.4.0)

What's New in Version 1.4.0

This update brings a new profile, a redesigned Journey experience, and a smarter home screen — here's what's changed.

Your Profile

You now have a profile in Baile Beo. Head to Settings and tap "My Profile" to see it.

Your profile shows your username, display name, home location, and a summary of your activity — how many journeys you've taken, how many places you've discovered, and how many
favourites you've saved. It also shows a preview of your favourite places, with a tap-through to the full list.

You can edit your profile to set a display name and choose your home county and home town. Your home location appears on your profile and helps personalise your experience over
time.

If you're opening the profile for the first time, you'll be asked to claim your username. Your username is permanent and will identify you on Baile Beo — you'll only need to do this
once.

A New Starting Point for Journeys

When you tap the Journey button, you'll now see a dedicated screen before the journey begins. At the moment this screen offers one option — Begin a Journey — but it's been designed
to grow. Future updates will add route planning and journey history here (more on that below).

We made this change because Journey Mode is one of the most distinctive features in Baile Beo, and we wanted to give it a proper home — a moment to set the scene before you head
out.

Home Screen: Towns and Monuments, Separated

The "Recently Added" section on the home screen has been split into two carousels: Recent Towns and Recent Monuments. Previously, towns and monuments were mixed together in a single
list, which made it harder to browse. Now each type has its own carousel, so you can scroll through whichever interests you.

Coming Soon: Baile Beo Órga

This update also lays the groundwork for Baile Beo Órga, a premium membership that will unlock additional features. You'll see Órga options appear in the Journey screen and on your
profile — including Route Planner, Saved Routes, and Journey History. These features are built and ready, but subscription sign-up is not yet open. We'll announce when it's
available.

Under the Hood

As always, this update includes stability improvements and small fixes across the app.

Thank you for using Baile Beo. If you enjoy it, please consider leaving a review — it makes a real difference.
