The Science: Why Sugar Matters
The modern diet is saturated with "hidden" sugars—specifically high-fructose corn syrup and sucrose—that bypass normal satiety signals and place an immense metabolic load on the liver. Unlike glucose, which can be used by every cell in the body, fructose is primarily processed in the liver, where high doses can trigger lipogenesis (fat production), insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation.

Metabolic Syndrome: Excessive refined sugar intake is a primary driver of metabolic syndrome, independent of total caloric intake (Lustig et al., 2012, Nature).
