SafePlate: Food Safety Scanner

SafePlate is an informational allergen-tracking app for families. Scan a barcode or photograph a food label, and SafePlate reads the ingredient list and highlights any matches against each family member's allergen profile — including hidden synonyms like "hydrolyzed soy protein."

SafePlate is an informational tool, not a medical device, and is not FDA cleared. SafePlate reads INGREDIENT TEXT only — it does NOT verify cooking temperature, doneness, hygiene, cross-contamination, expiration, or storage. You are responsible for cooking to a safe internal temperature, safe food-handling, and verifying freshness. Allergen highlights are not a guarantee of safety; always confirm with the manufacturer's label. In an emergency, call 911 — SafePlate does not call emergency services on your behalf.

WHAT'S IN THE APP

Per-profile allergen lists
• Add a profile for each family member with their own allergen list and the severity tier you assign yourself (mild, moderate, severe, life-threatening).
• 14 allergen categories: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin, mollusks, sulfites — plus custom user-defined ingredients you'd like to avoid.

Beyond allergens — user-configurable eating patterns
• Optional built-in ingredient lists for common eating patterns you may choose to follow: gluten-free, low-FODMAP, low-glycemic, low-sugar, low-acid, and lactose-free.
• Fully custom lists for any ingredient you want to avoid for any reason.
• Turn one or more on per profile; the app highlights matches the same way it does for allergens.
• SafePlate does not recommend, prescribe, or endorse any eating pattern — you decide which list to enable for each profile.

Three ways to scan
• Barcode lookup against the public Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central databases.
• Photograph an ingredient label — on-device AI reads the printed text.
• Photograph a restaurant menu or plated dish — the app extracts visible text and ingredient names you can review.

Convenience features
• Color-coded ingredient summary highlighting any configured matches.
• Cooking-temperature and hygiene reminders shown when meat, poultry, or seafood is scanned (informational only).
• On-device explanations for any flagged ingredient.
• Reaction Journal — log a date, food, severity tier, and a photo for your own records.
• Allergy cards in 11 languages with QR code, for handing to a server.
• Meal Planner — recipe suggestions that don't include any ingredient you've added across family profiles. You and the cook decide.

Restaurant tools
• Map of nearby restaurants filtered by user-submitted allergen tags, with notes contributed by other families. Always call ahead to confirm.

Public-data alerts
• Personal reminders for auto-injector expiration dates you log.
• Notifications when the public OpenFDA or USDA FSIS recall feeds post a Class I recall affecting anything in your scan history.

Apple platform integration
• Siri shortcuts, Spotlight search, and full VoiceOver labels.
