We built Boba because we were tired of calorie apps that hide basic features behind $30-a-year paywalls, send every photo of your lunch to someone else's server, and still get half your food identifications wrong. Boba is different by design.

ON-DEVICE AI
Boba runs a 2-billion parameter vision-language model, fine-tuned on a custom food dataset. The entire model ships inside the app — bundled at install time, no first-launch download, no cloud calls at inference. Everything happens on your iPhone's Neural Engine.
Test set accuracy: 89.8 calorie MAE. The best on-device food AI we could build.

PRIVACY BY ARCHITECTURE
Boba doesn't collect your data because the app is designed so it can't. There are no Boba servers that receive your photos. There is no user database. There are no analytics. The only outbound request the app ever makes is to Open Food Facts when you scan a barcode — and that query contains only the barcode digits, nothing else.
Your meals, weight, goals, and photos stay on your phone. Delete the app and everything is gone. That is the entire data flow.

Boba's vision model is a fine-tuned 2B VLM built by Doses AI. It identifies dishes, estimates portions, and outputs per-item nutrition locally. We'll improve it over time. Future major model upgrades may be offered as optional in-app upgrades, but the core app — scanning, logging, tracking - will always be free.
