OverTune

v1.3 4 MB Universal 4+

Description

Standard tuners detect one frequency. OverTune detects three.

Most acoustic instruments — and handpans in particular — produce a fundamental pitch together with an octave and a compound fifth. Bringing all three into precise alignment is what defines a well-tuned instrument. OverTune gives each overtone its own dedicated panel, analyzing them independently and simultaneously in real time.

THREE INDEPENDENT PANELS

Select any note from C1 to B7. OverTune configures three panels automatically:
• Panel 1 — Fundamental
• Panel 2 — Octave (2× fundamental)
• Panel 3 — Compound fifth (3× fundamental, one octave + a perfect fifth)

Each panel runs its own FFT spectral analysis with an adjustable frequency range, so you can focus exactly where you need to.

WHAT EACH PANEL CONTAINS

• Needle gauge — ±50 cent scale, spring-animated, with an in-tune zone at ±5 cents
• Stroboscope — an animated pattern behind the needle that scrolls with pitch deviation and freezes when perfectly in tune. Choose from chevron, sine wave, or square styles
• Frequency spectrum — logarithmic display with draggable range bounds and adjustable amplitude threshold
• Note history — a rolling time graph showing tuning stability. Horizontal mode covers ±2 semitones; Vertical mode covers ±6 semitones with time flowing top to bottom
• Reference tone — press and hold the speaker icon to hear a pure sine wave at that panel's target frequency. Double-tap to lock continuous playback

INSTRUMENT PRESETS

Filter the note selector to the exact notes of your instrument:
• 21 handpan scale layouts — Kurd, Integral, Hijaz, Celtic, Pygmy, Akebono, and more
• 20 musical scales — Major, Minor, Pentatonic, Blues, Modes, and World scales
• 13 string instrument tunings — Guitar, Bass, Violin, Cello, Ukulele, and more

TUNING TEMPERAMENT

With an instrument preset active, compare your pitch against historical tuning systems instead of standard 12-TET:
• Just Intonation — pure integer ratios
• Pythagorean — chain of pure 3:2 fifths
• Meantone (¼-comma) — pure 5:4 major thirds
• Custom — define your own cent offsets for all 12 scale degrees

EVERYTHING ELSE

• A4 reference pitch adjustable from 400 to 480 Hz
• Sharp or flat accidental notation — your choice
• Focus modes: Narrow (full range) or Tight (±2 semitones from target)
• Microphone selection for external audio inputs
• Keep screen on during tuning sessions
• Dark, light, or system appearance

BUILT FOR HANDPAN BUILDERS

Tuning a handpan means bringing the Doum (fundamental), Tak (octave), and compound fifth into harmonic alignment — one note at a time, strike after strike. OverTune was designed specifically for this workflow. Select a note, watch all three overtones simultaneously, and track your corrections over time with the history graph.

FREE TO TRY

OverTune includes 30 minutes of free daily use. A subscription unlocks all three panels with unlimited daily tuning time.

What's new (v1.3)

Custom Presets
Create and save your own note sets. Name them, edit, duplicate, and delete — your personal presets live alongside the built-in instrument library.

Panel Order
Rearrange the Fundamental, Octave, and Compound Fifth panels in any order you prefer directly from Settings.

Landscape Support
Rotate your device and OverTune adapts: panels sit side by side, the note selector moves to a vertical sidebar on the right, and each panel's readouts shift to a compact row above the full-width needle gauge.

More History Graph Orientations
The note history graph now offers additional orientation options to suit how you hold and use the app.

Stabler Readings
A confirmation gate filters out brief false detections, so the displayed note and cent value reflect a genuinely stable signal. Switching focus mode no longer clears the history graph.
